“If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon”

                              —  President Barak Obama

This is probably a rare,  if not the first,  time I agree with something Obama said.  His words in this instance are true. I speak from first-hand experienceas a Black man in America.  Trayvon is every Black man’s son  in America.  From generations past to the present day. Shame on Newt Gingrich for chastising the Presendent for his remarks about Trayvon. It shows he’s just another white man who has no clue about life in Black America.

All in all, this will turn out to be a huge plus for Obama with the Black community, pretty much assuring his reelection in November. And this coming from a Black Conservative Christian.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

On a clear and crisp autumn day on October 16th, 1967, Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at California State Sacramento State College (now California State University, Sacramento).   In his speech, King outlined his goals and ideals for the future. He would be the first to tell us that he was part of a larger social movement, and that he did not act alone.I listened to this speech the other day. And one quote which stuck me was this:

“It may well be that we will have to repent…for the appalling silence and indifference of the good people…”

MLK at Sacramento State

That, in a nutshell is what this blog is all about. Not to sit and stay silent but to speak out on the things that matter. Today Dr. King’s life and vision have been trivialized by commercialism. In fact, on one show I was watching this weekend, they said his life has been Hallmark-ized . I believe his message has been so watered down and cleaned up that the true power of it has been lost to the current generation.

If you really want to understand and recapture the power of Martin Luther King’s vision, you need to go back and read, not his political speeches, but the sermons hed delivered from the pulpit. It’s there you’ll find the true King who has been missing all these years and the true power behind his vision.
